The Entrepreneurial Development Series

February 2 - March 24, 2007

School of Management - University of Texas at Dallas

Overview

The Entrepreneurial Development Series is a practitioner-oriented program of education and skill development designed for entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, key employees in entrepreneurial firms, and managers in established firms seeking new growth opportunities through innovation and entrepreneurship.

The program begins with a reception and dinner on Friday, February 2 and continues over a period of eight consecutive Saturdays from February 3 through March 24.

Jointly presented by the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UTD and STARTech Early Ventures, the comprehensive program is taught by venture capitalists, CEOs, legal experts, UTD faculty and experienced entrepreneurs and start-up executives.

The cost of the program is $995, including an opening dinner and reception, all meals and a graduation reception. Single session registrations are offered for $175.

Participants who complete the entire series will receive a Certificate in Entrepreneurship from the Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at UTD.

Featured Speakers & Presenters

The opening dinner/reception will feature a keynote address by a prominent member of the local entrepreneurial community. Participants will have an opportunity to meet and mingle with the faculty and other session presenters during the reception.

Subsequent sessions will be led by experienced and knowledgeable professionals selected for their subject matter expertise. Each will incorporate an appropriate mix of theory, practice and real-world examples. UTD faculty, including Dr. Joseph Picken, Dr. David Deeds and Robert Robb will each present one or more sessions. These faculty members each bring solid academic credentials and a wealth of industry experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, software, electronics, office equipment, information and communications technologies, manufacturing, aviation services, and equipment leasing.

More than thirty outside speakers and panelists are featured on the program. Prominent venture capitalists will conduct sessions on their industry; attorneys from Jones Day and Haynes and Boone will address legal, regulatory and intellectual property issues; and experts on negotiation, and public relations will be featured. Angel investors and ETF/SBIR/SBIC experts will discuss alternative sources of financing. Entrepreneurial CEOs will address a variety of topics, including opportunity evaluation, entrepreneurial marketing, product development, team-building, bootstrap financing, risk management and entrepreneurial leadership.

Panel discussions featuring successful CEOs, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and service providers have been designed to address topics from multiple perspectives. Panelists will describe their experiences in avoiding the pitfalls and building successful companies.

What a series! An excellent course - packed full with practical, applicable information delivered by real world entrepreneurs in a comfortable and open forum. This course has enhanced my 20+ years of experience as an entrepreneur. I would recommend the series to anyone seeking to start a business or ready to take their company to the next level.

                                MEDIA MATTERS!

Your company has important news or a compelling story you would like to share with the world but no budget for marketing... what do you do?

                                * How can you capture the media's attention and obtain publicity and coverage for your news and announcements without spending your scarce marketing dollars?

                                * Who should you contact? the local paper? the radio? What type of information is each media outlet looking for and what are the best ways to contact them? Who decides which stories will be published?

                                * How do you know when your news qualifies to become a press release?

                                * What are some things to consider when writing a media announcement?

Join us to hear a panel of media and communications experts discuss the details that can make or break your campaign.

Virtual Worlds, Simulation & Game Technologies

            January 19, 2007 (8:00 - 5:30)
            Davidson Auditorium
            School of Management
The University of Texas at Dallas

Audiences will get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the future of simulation and gaming at the "Virtual Worlds, Simulation and Game Technologies" showcase, which is the second in a series of research and new venture showcases presented by the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at The University of Texas at Dallas.

The showcase will highlight the work of researchers in the UT Dallas Institute for Interactive Arts and Engineering (IIAE) and local companies active in the production of video games, robotics and digital animation. Speakers and panelists will include John C. Donkin, an academy award-nominated director of animated feature films and Lieutenant General Thomas F. Metz, Deputy Commanding General of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command. UT Dallas President Dr. David Daniel will introduce Metz during the afternoon session.

John C. Donkin is Technical Director of Blue Sky Studios and the producer of the feature films Ice Age, Robots and Ice Age: The Meltdown. He produced the award-winning short Gone Nutty, featuring the character Scrat from Ice Age, earning him an Academy Award nomination in 2006.

According to Dr. Tom Linehan, director of the IIAE, gaming is no longer just a diversion for adolescents.

"Because gaming features powerful interaction and choice, instant feedback and full immersion in the virtual environment, the underlying technologies are being utilized for serious gaming, with applications in fields as diverse as training, education, medicine, real estate development, news and banking and finance," Linehan said.

Presentations by UT Dallas researchers will focus on such topics as the technology of simulation and gaming in military training; the use of virtual environments in entertainment, education and medicine; games as interactive narratives; and motion capture and animation in gaming and entertainment. Several companies, including Hanson Robotics, Acropolis Laboratories, Reel FX and MultiGen Paradigm, will make presentations about future applications. The day's program will conclude with a networking session for participants.

The cost of the program is $95 including lunch and the closing reception.
